The 2024 Virtual Symposium took place on October 22, offering on-demand access for 30 days until it closes on Wednesday, November 20 at 11:59 p.m. CT. This unique education offering includes live and pre-recorded sessions, virtual poster presentations, and provides the opportunity to earn up to 12 nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hours.

Dr. Jim Kirkpatrick is a seasoned expert in training evaluation and the visionary behind the New World Kirkpatrick Model, bringing a unique blend of expertise to his role as senior consultant for Kirkpatrick Partners. With a doctorate in clinical psychology, Jim's understanding of human behavior and motivation deepens his ability to guide organizations in creating impactful training programs. His 15 years of corporate experience, including eight years as a training manager, have honed his skills in helping professionals transition from traditional roles to strategic business partners, making a tangible difference in the workplace.

The Wright Competency Model

This session will delve into the Wright Competency Model, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of what makes a successful competency program. You'll hear directly from the model's creator about this widely used competency process. Donna will share her keys to success to operationalize the Wright Competency Model and how to adapt the model to your NPD practice.

Speaker's Bio

Donna Wright is a nurse and professional development specialist with Creative Healthcare Management. Donna has degrees in Nursing, Family Sociology, and Adult Education. Donna has worked with many health care organizations around the world to help them create meaningful, effective programs that support professional development and competency assessment for all departments. She is the author of the book, The Ultimate Guide to Competency Assessment in Healthcare and The Competency Assessment Field Guide, and has co-authored other texts on relationship-based care. Donna received her degrees from the University of Minnesota, and has worked in both staff and leadership roles. Donna is a member and past president of the Association for Nursing Professional Development and is a recipient of their Promoting Excellence in Consultation award and the Marlene Kramer Lifetime Achievement award.

Speakers' Bio

Dr. Casey is a Professional Development Specialist at Denver Health, in Denver, Colorado, where she focuses on nursing continuing professional development, improving the graduate nurse experience, and retaining nurses in the workforce. Her research efforts include survey development and furthering new knowledge to evaluate transition to practice programs. She co-developed the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey, the Casey-Fink Readiness for Practice Survey, the Casey-Fink Retention Survey, and the ANPD Nurses in Professional Development Casey-Fink Role Transition Experience Survey. In March 2023, Kathy received the Marlene Kramer Lifetime Achievement Award from the ANPD Board of Directors. In October 2023, she was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing.

Dr. Harper is the Director of Research and Inquiry for the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD). Her recent research focuses on NPD in ambulatory care, the value of NPD in acute care organizations, and precepting. She is the editor of the Leadership Column in the Journal for Nurses in Professional Development. Dr. Harper is co-editor of the 3rd and 4th (current) editions of the Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice and Legal Aspects of Nursing Professional Development Practice, 2nd edition. Additionally she is the editor of 6th edition of the Core Curriculum for Nursing Professional Development and Leadership in Nursing Professional Development, 2nd edition.

Ms. Mernin, a Supervisor for Nursing Professional Development at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Florida, is deeply committed to her role. Her passion projects include developing tools and methods for the novice nursing professional development practitioner to be successful while transitioning to the role. She is a strong advocate for the NPD team, building collaborative relationships with nursing administration leaders and other leaders within the healthcare system, and demonstrating the value of nursing professional development for all healthcare organizations. Mandi’s introduction to research and survey development was inspired by the works of Dr. Cathy Kasey, Dr. Mary Harper, and Dr. Regina Fink. She would like to thank these incredible women for forging the path for future generations to continue to build up the role of the Nursing Professional Development Practitioner. She received her BSN from Florida Gulf Coast University and her MSN from the University of Phoenix.

What is Wrong with You? Addressing Learner Behaviors Through Trauma-Informed Professional Development

NPD practitioners rely on the active participation of learners to achieve the outcomes we are looking for, but the behaviors of some learners can get in the way. In this presentation, we will discuss the science behind some of these behaviors and some evidence-based approaches to addressing them.

Speaker's Bio

Dr. Heidi Gilroy is the Director of Professional Development, Magnet, and Research at Memorial Hermann the Woodlands Medical Center. She has more than 20 years of experience in nursing and more than 10 in education and professional development. Her research focus is on enhancing learner outcomes using trauma-informed approach. Dr. Gilroy developed the Trauma-Informed Professional Development model that allows organizations and NPD practitioners to create learning and practice environments where clinicians can recover after a traumatic event.

Danene’s academic journey includes a Bachelor of Art in Psychology, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master of Science in Education, and a Doctorate in Philosophy, complemented by multiple national certifications in nursing and holistic practices. Danene is serving as President Ex-Officio of the ANPD affiliate: Chicago Association for Nursing Professional Development (CANPD) and was the 2024 affiiate representative on ANPD's Conference Planning Committee. Danene’s passions for holistic care is reflected in her service in the community as a holistic practitioner and instructor, but also through her consulting business, DCS Wellness Consulting, PLLC, offering services such as yoga, meditation, Reiki, sound baths, Intrinsic and Integrative Nurse Coaching.

Earn Up to 12 NCPD Contact Hours

Target Audience: NPD practitioners, NPD specialists, NPD nurse leaders, PD associates, Nursing education instructors and faculty.

Outcome: 65% of participants will report that each session provides information that enhances, validates, or causes a change in practice.

Successful Completion: Successful completion to obtain NCPD contact hours includes registration for symposium, attestation of attendance at sessions claimed for contact hours, and completion of the online evaluation for sessions attended and overall evaluation. Participants are required to complete evaluations by December 15, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. CT, to be awarded the contact hours.

Continuing Education: Association for Nursing Professional Development is accredited with distinction as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
